As the writers strike trundles on and your favorite shows disappear (only 8 episodes of Lost, friends) it may seem as though there is nothing - nothing! - worth watching. (I feel like one of those weepy JAG Fans.) All that’s left is reality TV and that’s just horrible, right? Well, not entirely. Bravo, that suspiciously gay-skewing, brightly colored phantasmagoria, is offering two series, one already great and one sure-to-be great. Yes they’re reality, but it’s all we’ve got.
Project Runway has been on for a few weeks, but there are still a good number of episodes left. A brief recap of what’s happened so far: early people who got kicked off mostly deserved it, except for big fat gay costume designer Chris March who is wonderful. But don’t worry he came back when Hardy Boy Jack had to go home because his face started melting. There’s a little monkey named Christian who is a prodigy and is increasingly fun to watch, the lone straight guy, Kevin, got voted off last week, and there’s a really nice (if maybe not that talented) Mother Hen named Sweet P. My favorite to win it is curly-haired quiet girl Jillian. Judge Michael Kors is insane and the challenges actually seem hard, but in a they’re-really-going-to-pull-it-out-in-the-end kind of way.
The new show is Real Housewives of New York City. If you’ve seen its big sister, set in Orange County, you should have some idea what to expect: drunken rambling about “having it all” and criminal negligence. While these women do seem a little more career-focused than their sun-baked counterparts, there’s one lady whose last name is de Lesseps who is married to a French count. Plus one of the wives says “We all go out and have fun, we work hard and then we party hard.” So that probably bodes well for complete disaster. All but one live on the Upper East Side (the other’s in Cobble Hill. Strange.) This can only mean that a reality version of Gossip Girl is a possibility, so we should all watch this adults version so the other will get made and the world will spin better on it axis.
Or you could go read that Junot Diaz book. Whatever.
