Regina Spektor - (MySpace Site)
First thing is first, I just snagged a seat in the front row, and settled into my chair, when Regina comes out. What happens next? She sits behind the piano and I can’t see a damn thing. So, after I moved to the side stage and took a deep breath, she begins to play. Touring in support of her critically acclaimed and RIAA Gold Certified album, Begin To Hope, the Russian-born, Bronx-bred Regina Spektor is one of those rare talents who manage to outrun the trends and force the rest of the world to keep up.
“On The Radio” (rightclick+save as) was her opener, and my favorite song of the set. After singing, she mentioned she tore up her ankle pretty bad at the “War Inc.” premiere the night before. Everytime after that, any movement and about 7 random women would “aweeee” in the audience , ITS A FUCKING ANKLE! Anyhow, as she continues her set, I am baffled by the fact that some artist always sound amazing, even if they have sung a song 10,000 times, like I’m sure Regina has. If it were me I would probably start substituting words in and see if people would notice. When she gets to “Better” she adds a new layer to this live version, some kisses and claps into the microphone during the refrain, which I find hilariously amusing but adorable none-the-less. Finally, Regina gets whacko, which I love, the kisses in the mic were foreshadowing for her crazy “beating on a chair with a drumstick” bit. “Poor Little Rich Boy” plays on the piano with her left hand, while beating the back beat with the stick and her right hand. Angry beats and vocals about Fitzgerald and Hemingway accompany a variety of sounds any quartet would be pleased with. But, this is one girl singing it all, one cute, raven haired limping girl.
