Ingrid Michaelson (MySpace Site)
OK, as the band set up (that’s right, Ingrid Michaelson, your indie MySpace darling is rocking a full 5 part band including adorable guitarist/singer Allie Moss) and Ingrid steps out in a black sweater, painted on jeans and boots stolen out of Xena’s closet, she begins to wail. Ingrid Michaelson first gained attention after four of her songs aired on “Grey’s Anatomy,” including the coveted final six minutes of last season’s finale. Old Navy then featured her song “The Way I Am” in a commercial campaign, sparking her self-released album Girls and Boys to become a fixture on the Billboard Top 200 and iTunes.
As “I….Never thought…I could Love…anyone…but YOU!” is sung, I realize something. Ms. Michaelson has shed her internet community driven skin, and is showing us all her fantastic new music scales. She is an actual rocker, in the likes of Michelle Branch and K.T.Tunstall and dare do I say it Sheryl Crow. I mean, she is a little pitchy (Randy Jackson?!) and stand-offish at times, yaknow I feel closer to her piano during slower songs than I do her, but that will fade. She then sings a silly song called “Overboard” she wrote while sitting in a boat with her best friend who wanted to jump overboard so the lobster fisherman would save her. Now comes”The Chain” (rightclick+save as), a song sung in the round (which apparently was a music assignment she gave herself, to write a song-in-the-round) plays, I close my eyes and soak it in. The words “If you come around again I will take the chain off the door” are repeated over and over and I’m a little weppie. This here my friends is going to be the new “someone grab this up and sell something with it” song, I gaurantee it. Why you ask? She writes songs about all of us, that we can all invision us inside of, but in fact are about none of us at all.
